SIPTU and UNITE members at the Cadbury production plant in Coolock, Dublin 5, have gone on strike today following the manufacturer’s decision to outsource the jobs of 17 workers.
According to a statement by SIPTU, union members voted "overwhelmingly" to take the action after management announced that it would implement a Labour Court recommendation to outsource the jobs in question. SIPTU Sector Organiser, John Dunne, stated, "The work stoppage at the plant will continue until management ends the attempt to outsource these jobs."
SIPTU Manufacturing Division Organiser, Gerry McCormack, said that workers were already concerned following the company’s decision to move production of the Time Out bar to its Polish plant, and that this latest announcement "is seen as a further erosion of the viability of the facility".
He added, "The attempt by the management of Mondelez International to further downgrade the plant’s operations has caused outrage and increased fears among the workforce about its long-term commitment to the facility."
