Glanbia To Make Up To 60 Staff Redundant In Irish Restructuring

Glanbia is planning a restructuring of its administrative features which will result in the Kilkenny-based nutrition group making up to 60 staff redundant, the Irish Times reported today.

Some of the redundancies will be compulsory.

The company informed staff of a new planned centralised unit – Glanbia Enterprise Solutions – for the delivery of finance, HR and IT services.

It will outsource some of the work to third-party providers.

Glanbia currently employs 590 staff across Dublin, Kilkenny and Waterford, with this move potentially cutting its Irish staff headcount by 10% with each of these locations impacted by the cuts.

The company reportedly started informing staff of the planned restructuring on Monday, with a 30-day consultation period to begin on 30 January.

Glanbia will then go ahead with the job cuts on a phased basis over the coming year.

Statement

In a statement to the Irish Times, Glanbia said its Irish business had seen significant changes in recent years, including its exit from dairy processing and selling its share of a mozzarella joint venture.

Glanbia said, ‘To ensure that we are prepared for our next stage of growth and to enhance how we serve the needs of our business globally, the company is making some changes to its services functions through a digital transformation programme.

‘As part of these changes, Glanbia is establishing a new enterprise solutions function (Glanbia Enterprise Solutions – GES), which will centralise and optimise the delivery of finance, HR and IT services to the business.

‘Regrettably the proposed changes will result in the reduction in a number of roles across finance, HR and IT.

‘Due to the nature of the consultation process and timelines, the exact numbers cannot be confirmed at this stage, however it is anticipated that up to 60 roles in Ireland will be impacted on a phased basis in 2025.

‘We will work closely with employees and their representative groups to support everyone over the coming period, providing severance packages and outplacement services.’

Voluntary And Compulsory Redundancies

A spokeswoman from the company confirmed that there will be a mix of voluntary and compulsory redundancies as part of the restructuring.

The union that represents workers at Glanbia’s Dungarvan site – Unite – said it had engaged in “initial discussions” with the company about the future of its members.

Unite’s regional officer Eoin Drummey said, “We remain committed to ongoing engagement and consultation with management to minimise the number of voluntary redundancies and to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of operations in Dungarvan.”

Glanbia has 5,800 employees globally and posted revenues of more than €1.73 billion for the first half of 2024.
