GSK has announced today that it is to close its Sligo manufacturing plant with the loss of 165 jobs by 2021.
In a statement today (16 August), the company said it had informed employees at the manufacturing site of a proposal to close the site.
"In recent years, our Sligo site has delivered significant improvements in cost and efficiency. However, demand for the products made on site has not grown in line with previous expectations, due to the highly competitive market in which we operate, making our current business model unsustainable," the pharmaceutical company said in the statement.
"We have not made this proposal lightly. We thoroughly evaluated a number of alternatives for the Sligo site, none of them were considered feasible without significant further investment."
Local Impact
The company said that it understands the impact of this proposal on its employees, their families, and the local region.
"Our immediate priority is to support them through this difficult period," the Panadol maker said.
The company employs 1,500 people in its four locations in Ireland.
However, GSK’s other operations in Ireland (manufacturing sites in Cork and Dungarvan, and commercial operations in Dublin) are not affected by this proposal.
