Diageo Raises Guinness Price For Fourth Time In Two Years

The price of a pint of Guinness rose by 6 cent on Bank Holiday Monday, excluding VAT, the Journal reported this week.

Diageo confirmed last month that it would be raising the price of popular pints, with Harps, Smithwick’s and Hophouse 13 all seeing the same price increase.

The price of a pint of Guinness 0.0 – a non-alcoholic offering – also rose by 9 cent, excluding VAT.

Once VAT, duty fees and the pub margin are added to the price, it could result in an extra 30 cents per pint.

This means that Guinness could cost over €6 in many pubs and more than €7 in Dublin, according to Drinks Industry Ireland.

This is the fourth price increase for Guinness in two years.

In January, the Vintner’s Federation of Ireland (VFI) said the latest hike is “a blow to an industry already on its knees” and many publicans will have to pass on the increase to customers.

The Journal reported that a Diageo spokesperson told the publication at the time, “Like many businesses, we continue to face increased costs across our Irish operations.

“In an effort to offset these costs and to maintain a sustainable business in Ireland, we have advised our on-trade customers that there will be an increase to the list prices on our full draught product range.”

The CEO of VFI last month said, “Publicans are being squeezed from every angle – rising energy costs, higher wages and government-imposed charges.

“This latest price increase from Diageo adds yet another layer of financial pressure on pubs already struggling to keep doors open.”

Last month, Diageo said it had “no intention” to sell the Guinness brand, despite reports to the contrary.
