An official ‘Independent Craft Beer of Ireland” symbol has been launched by the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland (ICBI). The symbol is designed to assist consumers seeking genuine Irish craft beer and to make an informed purchase based on the providence of the product.
The ICBI have remarked that the recent growth in the microbrewery and independent beer market (more than 80 registered microbreweries in Ireland now, compared to less than 20 five years ago) has led some companies to release products to market that misrepresent themselves as craft beers.
The new Independent Irish Craft Beer symbol is intended to assure consumers that the beer they are purchasing comes from an independently owned, small scale Irish microbrewery that is registered appropriately with Revenue, and that the brewer has complete ownership over the brand.
Any brewer whose beer fulfils the criteria may submit it for approval by the ICBI review panel, and use of the symbol will be managed through spot checks on the marketplace and a formalized complaints channel.
