Bord na Móna has reportedly announced that up to 430 workers are to be made redundant.
The job losses follow a decision by the company to close 17 of its 62 active bogs where peat is harvested, reports Breakingnews.ie
It is believed that a voluntary redundancy programme will be opened shortly.
Coal Business Closure
In March this year the State energy company announced its plans is to close its loss-making coal business, in Lullymore, Co.Kilare
This was reportedly following the Government’s recent decision to make the Republic a “low-smoke zone”.
“The company will fully comply with the provision of the new low-smoke zone and will exit the bituminous coal business before a total ban comes into effect in 2019,” Bord na Móna said at the time.
