The Government has announced a new ten-year strategy for the Irish agri-food sector, Food Wise 2025, which aims to create over 23,000 new jobs.
The strategy was crafted over the past eight months by 35 leading figures from across the agri-food sector and is an ambitious new vision document outlining what the Government wants to happen in the agri-food sector over the next decade.
If the strategy is successful it could lead to a 65% increase in primary food production here and an 85% increase in our food and drink exports, along with the afofementioned creation of 23,000 new jobs in the agri-food sector. Social, economic, and environmental sustainability will be central to the strategy and it'll explicitly recognise the environmental impact that increasing food production will have.
In order to ensure that Ireland is producing food for the right markets and their highest value segments, there will be a much heavier focus on consumer insights as part of the strategy. Also, the Government outlined that environmental protection and economic competitiveness are to be equal and complimentary.
