The Department of Health has commenced a public consultation on transposition of the revised European Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU).
The Directive has been designed to harmonise laws on tobacco products and electronic cigarettes across the EU.
It also aims to allow for the smooth functioning of the internal tobacco products market, while guaranteeing a high level of public health protection.
The Directive regulates a range of areas, including labelling and packaging, ingredients and emissions, traceability and security features, as well as cross border distance sales.
The requirements of the Directive must be transposed by Member States into their national legislation by May 2016, but within some those mandatory requirements Member States may determine certain discretionary elements.
Details of the consultation, which focuses on those discretionary elements within the Directive, can be found on the Department of Health’s website, while the online questionnaire will remain open until 5pm on November 18th.
