Did you know… Three Tesco outlets and an O’Briens outlet in the vicinity of Lansdowne Road closed their off-licence services for a period in the run up to the Ireland v Poland match at the Aviva Stadium last Sunday? Following a Garda request, the off-licences of Tesco Sandymount, Ringsend and Baggot Street were closed from 4pm to 7.30pm, while O’Briens Sandymount closed between 5pm and 7pm. An O’Briens store worker told Retail Intelligence that it was the “first time” the store has been asked to close due to a match taking place.
Did you know… Heineken is going into the cider business? Heineken Ireland is set to launch a new cider brand on May 1st, however the brand’s identity is being kept under wraps until the launch. Fiona Curtin, Senior Innovation Manager at HEINEKEN Ireland said: “Our new cider brand has been under development for over 3 years. We have undertaken major research into the category, from a branding and taste perspective, and we know that Irish cider drinkers are looking for an alternative.”
Did you know… Dermot Griffin, chief executive of Premier Lotteries Ireland, has written an open letter to retailers, apologising for the inconveniences recent service outages have caused retailers. “Solutions to these outages are currently being put in place and we will continually work to improve the resilience of our communications network,” he wrote. Noting that the company was coming to the end of a period of transition, Griffin added that as this draws to a close, “continuity of service and ensuring minimal negative impact on retailers and players will remain paramount.”
Did you know…Breaking Bad actor and Budweiser ambassador Aaron Paul has revealed the winner of the Budweiser Dream Job competition? Mark Griffin from Ardnacrusha, Clare, will receive a €50,000 prize fund to give him the freedom to work towards his goal of becoming an actor and director. He will also receive a €5,000 equipment bursary and mentoring sessions with experts from the television industry.
Did you know.. Glanbia has set up a new Irish company called Glanbia Cheesip Ltd, which will acquire and hold intellectual property associated with Glanbia’s dairy cheese operation? The Irish Times reports that the new company will also carry out financial transactions connected with Glanbia’s dairy cheese business.
Did you know… Diageo plc has been named as joint leader of the FTSE 100 companies for female representation at board level for the second year in the row? The parent company of Guinness currently has five female members on a board of eleven. Diageo’s Executive Committee also has 40% female representation.
Did you know… Irish dairy farmers are facing an €80m superlevy charge after figures were released showing the country was over quota by 5.07% at the end of February. According to Agriland, The Department for Agriculture, Food and the Marine will be required to pay the superlevy in full to the European Commission by the deadline of November 31, 2015, with the terms of the scheme requiring farmers to repay a one-third of the payment this year and two thirds by next, with the remainder payable in 2017.
