The family that operates Dunnes Stores has seen its personal wealth increase to €1.77 billion, up from €1.67 billion a year earlier, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List, which was published at the weekend.
Frank Dunne, Margaret Heffernan, Sharon McMahon and family place in 7th position in the Irish edition of the list, which is topped by Hilary and Alannah Weston, members of the family that owns Selfridges, Brown Thomas and Primark, who are worth an estimated €14.1 billion.
Other notable retail names to appear in the Sunday Times Rich List are Applegreen’s Bob Etchingham (54th, €204 million) and Joe Barrett (188th, €71 million), former Superquinn boss Feargal Quinn (83rd, €154 million), and Des Pettitt of Pettitt’s Supermarkets (156th, €83 million).
On the supplier side, there are placings for whiskey entrepreneur Pearse Lyons and family (4th, €1.92 billion), meat baron Larry Goodman and family (20th, €679 million), Bert and Maurice Allen of Slaney Meats (36th, €346 million) and Joseph Brennan and family (41st, €269 million).
According to the paper, the “Irish high-flyers have seen their combined value grow by more than £1.8 billion (€2.31 billion) to £56.596 billion (€72.73 billion) in the past year.”
This is the 20th edition of the Irish Rich List, which was first published by the Sunday Times in 1997. Interestingly, the Dunnes family also all placed highly in the list’s first edition, with Margaret Heffernan valued at €223 million, and Frank Dunne at €218 million.
