According to the latest Consumer Insights study by Empathy Research, Tesco’s Clubcard is the most popular supermarket loyalty programme, with more than 8 out of 10 (87%) respondents that are signed up to supermarket loyalty card schemes currently registered with it.
The research also found that 9 out of 10 Irish consumers (91%) are currently registered to a supermarket loyalty/club card scheme.
After Tesco, the next most popular loyalty schemes are those of Dunnes Stores (71%) and SuperValu (59%).
The Tesco Clubcard is equally popular among both males (87%) and females (87%), while females are significantly more likely to be registered with Dunnes Stores (79% vs. 62% males) or SuperValu (64% vs. 54% males).
Almost two-thirds of loyalty card owners (65%) indicated that they scan their loyalty card every time they are shopping. A further 31% remember to scan their loyalty card 'most of the time'. Females are significantly more likely to scan their loyalty card every time they shop (72% vs. 57% males).
Key chain style cards are the preferred style of loyalty card, with three fifths of consumers (58%) stating their preference for them over the more traditional credit card style (33%).
