Walsh Whiskey Distillery has appointed Lisa Ryan to the position of Distillery Manager. The company produces The Irishman and Writers’ Tears premium Irish whiskeys, which are sold in over 40 countries worldwide. Ryan, who is from Carlow, was previously with Waterford Distillery. She succeeds Aidan Finnegan who has relocated to Scotland.
Irish retailers fear that there will be a hard Brexit, which could result in possible cost inflation and tariffs, according to speakers at an event held in PwC this past week. Over 120 retail leaders met at the event in Dublin, which focused on assessing the risks associated with Brexit, and trying to develop contingency plans.
The US Department of Agriculture has approved Bord Bia’s plan to market Irish beef in America, reported by TheJournal.ie. After three years of discussion, the decision made by the USDA now allows claims made by Bord Bia to be validated by national authority.
BIM’s Seafood Conference 2017 takes place on 29 June in The Radisson Blu Hotel in Galway. This one-day event will be opened by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and moderated by Gavin Duffy of RTE’s Dragon’s Den. Over 200 delegates from Ireland’s Seafood Sector are expected to gather to hear from a range of Irish and International experts across the fields of Skills, Sustainability, Innovation and Competitiveness.
The Just Eat Street food festival is set to take place in July, across Dublin and Cork locations. Part of Laya Healthcare’s City Spectacular, the event brings together street food from around the world and live music. The festival kicks off in Dublin’s Merrion Square on 8 July, before moving to Cork’s Fitzgerald Park on 15 July.
Lidl opened 10 stores in the US last week. Stores have opened in Kinston, Greenville, Sanford, Wilson and Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Spartanburg and Greenville, South Carolina; and Virginia Beach and Hampton, Virginia.
UK retailer Poundland, which is part of the Steinhoff International Group and operates Dealz in Ireland, has taken aim at Mondelez' Toblerone with the launch of a new private label chocolate bar called Twin Peaks. A press release to announce the launch noted that work on Twin Peaks began earlier this year, 'after the makers of Toblerone – Poundland’s top-selling item – created uproar by reducing the weight of the bar by 20g and changing the shape of its iconic brand'.
