White wine continues to be the most frequently consumed type of wine by adults in Ireland, with almost 4 in 10 (39%) claiming to drink white wine once a month or more often, up marginally from 2017 levels (37%).
There is a higher frequency of consumption evident for white wine than recorded for red wine, where just over a third (34%) of adults claim to drink once a month or more often, also up marginally from 2017 levels (32%).
Recent research carried out on behalf of Retail Intelligence by Empathy Research, amongst a nationally representative sample of 1,027 adults aged 18+, sought to understand the dynamics at play in in the two main wine categories and what factors are contributing to this behaviour.
The wine category continues to be going through somewhat of a change, with a high degree of change in consumption evident across both red and white wine. There are just over 1 in 7 (15%) red wine drinkers who claim they have increased the frequency of their consumption over the past year, with almost a quarter (23%) claiming to have decreased the frequency of their red wine consumption, up from 20% in 2017.
There are two key behaviours affecting the red wine category, just over a quarter (26%) of those who have reduced consumption have done so as a result of an overall reduction in the amount of alcohol they are consuming, although this is some way down from levels recorded in 2017 (43%). Just over a third (35%) claim they have reduced their consumption because they have lost their taste for red wine, in line with 2017 levels.
Amongst white wine consumers, just over 1 in 8 (13%) claim they have increased their frequency of consuming white wine, with just over 1 in 5 (22%) claiming to have decreased the frequency of their consumption.
Key reasons for reducing the amount of white wine being consumed is primarily down to consumers claiming they have lost their taste for white wine (49%), increasing from 2017 levels (42%). Almost a quarter (24%) claim that they have reduced their white wine consumption as part of an overall reduction in their overall alcohol intake.
