The managing director of Applegreen Fiona Matthews has won CEO of The Year at the IMAGE PwC Businesswoman of the Year Awards.
Bobby Kerr presented Matthews with the award on behalf of sponsor Kuehne+Nagel at a gala event hosted in the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road, Dublin.
There were 960 guests in attendance where Matthews came out on top ahead of ten other nominees.
Matthews said she was “absolutely thrilled to have won the award” and “felt humbled and privileged to have been shortlisted alongside the other phenomenal nominees.”
She dedicated the award to her family and “the brilliant support that I have at home and also to my Applegreen family and the brilliant teams who inspire me every day.”
The group chief executive of Applegreen Joe Barrett said that winning CEO of the Year represents “a significant achievement for Fiona and is a fantastic recognition of her wonderful leadership skills” and her overall impact on the business.
Barrett continued, “Fiona has a huge passion for the retail sector and for empowering our people across the business to work together to deliver the best experience on the road for our customers.”
Matthews joined Applegreen in October 2019 as commercial director for is Republic of Ireland business and subsequently became the managing director in April 2021.
She previously worked with the Walt Disney Company, Kepak and Glanbia.

Since opening its first service station in Ballyfermot in 1992, Applegreen has expanded and now operates almost 200 locations in the Irish market.
In February, the company opened a new €10 million service station at the Clondrinagh Roundabout in Limerick, creating 80 new jobs for the area.
