A 'brilliantly executed study" submitted by Lucy Deegan, a 17-year old student from Co.Laois has been chosen as the overall winner of this year's Texaco Childrens Art Competition. The winner of the 63rd art competition was announced at a reception yesterday at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin.
Her winning entry entitled 'Tom - Summer' which is a coloured pencil portrait of her brother Tom was described by competition adjudicators as an 'exquisitely finished piece’.
When asked about the inspiration behind the winning portrait, Deegan said: “My brother Tom is special to our family. Because he means so much to us, I wanted to capture him at his happiest.”
Professor Declan McGonagle, Chairman of the judging panel, described the winning entry as “a life-like and brilliantly executed study in which the artist has so perfectly captured the personality of her subject and in which the affection she has for her brother is so wonderfully revealed.”
The winning prize is a cheque for €1,500. In addition to this, the young artist will be invited to travel to Tokyo next August at the invitation of the International Foundation for Arts and Culture.
The first Texaco Children’s Art Competition was held in 1955 making it Ireland’s longest-running sponsorship (of any kind).
Past winners include well-known artists such as Graham Knuttel, Robert Ballagh, fashion designer Paul Costello and former broadcaster and artist Thelma Mansfield.
