South Africa's Spar Group, which owns BWG Food Group in Ireland, is reportedly set to take majority control of Piotr I Pawel, a Polish retailer.
As reported by Checkout's sister publication, ESM: European Supermarket Magazine, the Spar Group is partnering with TFI Capital Partners to establish a new company which will operate the Polish business.
There have been no details revealed regarding the value of the transaction, which will be subject to competition approval by UOKiK, the Polish competition authority.
The acquisition further strengthens the Spar Group's presence in Europe, where it operates in Ireland, Switzerland, and the UK.
In Ireland, through its ownership of the BWG Group, the Spar Group controls approximately 12% of the grocery market share through its convenience channel including Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis, Gala, and BWG Foodservice.
