Leading retailer and wholesaler BWG Foods has reported a significant spike in sales across key categories related to sunny weather as shoppers take solace in the high temperatures recorded over the last week.
According to BWG Foods, owners and operators of the Spar, Eurospar, Londis, Mace and XL retail brands, with a network of over 1,000 stores nationwide, sales of sunscreen have jumped by 115% this week and BBQ products have also seen an increase of 82% as consumers turn to outdoor dining to enjoy the sunshine.
Additionally, ice cream sales have risen by 60%, salads by 10.5%, water by 32%, soft drinks by 30% and packed ice by 30% this week.
Beachgoers also contributed to the bumper trading period with sales of summer toys such as buckets and spades up 48%.
'Staycationing'
Commenting on behalf of BWG Foods, owners and operators of theSpar, Eurospar, Londis, Mace and XL retail brands, John Moane, chief commercial officer, BWG Foods said, “The combination of people staycationing, working from home, and the longer evenings has resulted in people truly embracing the fine weather we’ve experienced over the last week.
Moane highlighted that's its retailers across the country have registered a very significant increase in sales across all key categories that one might associate with warm sunny weather.
"These sales trend figures also go to highlight how people have quickly adapted to this year’s outdoor summer theme and are enjoying the best of what Ireland has to offer in the process, with our retailers on hand to cater to their everyday needs all across the country,” he added.
