Retailer Donnybrook Fair has closed its Baggot Street branch in Dublin City, as it ceased trading earlier this week.
A sign in the window of the premises announced the closure.
It read, ‘Donnybrook Fair Baggot Street will close permanently on 9th November 2024.’
The sign goes on to thank customers for their support while the store was open, on behalf of the store’s management and staff.
The Retailer
Donnybrook Fair is a gourmet grocery store that was first established as a family business by Joe and Mary Doyle in 1991.
It offers an array of fresh and high-quality products, including bakery items, freshly prepared ready meals, soups, and hand-crafted sandwiches.
The store also runs a fresh-food counter, with artisanal ingredients, where office workers can get bites such as sandwiches and wraps on their lunch break.
Musgrave acquired the retailer in 2018 for an undisclosed sum, after Dunnes Stores withdrew from a potential takeover deal just weeks before.
Speaking at the time of the acquisition, the then CEO of Musgrave, Chris Martin, said, “Donnybrook Fair increases our penetration of the Dublin food market, and our intention is to maintain and grow the brand for the long term.
“We are looking forward to taking it to the next stage of development.”
Inflation
Donnybrook Fair is one of the latest businesses to close in Dublin’s city centre, which has suffered due to high inflation, tight budgets, and an increase in work from home.
The high cost of living has also contributed to shoppers opting for lunches from home or cheaper options, in an effort to save money.
However, Donnybrook Fair still operates stores in Dundrum, Malahide, Stillorgan, Greystones and Donnybrook.
Donnybrook Fair’s namesake location, on Morehampton Road, is just one kilometre away from the shuttered Baggot Street store, according to the closure sign.
The Morehampton Road store has been recently revamped and continues to provide the brand’s signature products.
