Dunnes Stores staff at Newbridge, Co. Kildare have been warned that their cars will be clamped if they use the store’s car park. Mandate Trade Union have condemned management of the store, saying that workers cannot afford the €50 fine to release cars.
Last month Dunnes Stores announced that its 116 stores would no longer provide free parking to its staff. Newbridge employees of the retailer have continued to use the parking facilities despite the threat of clamping if they do not pay parking fees.
Mandy Kane, Mandate Union organiser said, “Many Dunnes Stores locations are not serviced by public transport and they don’t have any affordable parking options in the nearby vicinity. The burden that is being placed on low paid, precarious workers is unfair.”
The issue is also exacerbated by an increase of staff on low hour contracts, meaning a higher demand on spaces.
