The Irish Grocers’ Benevolent Fund (IGBF) has extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Joe and Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust for its remarkable donation of €50,000.
The late Joe O’Toole, of O’Toole’s SuperValu, in Tuam, Galway, established the Joe and Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust to help both the local and wider communities.
Joe and Helen opened their first supermarket in Tuam on 17 February 1967.
Since Helen’s death in 2013 and Joe’s death six years later, the trust has continued their mission to help those in need through generous charitable donations.

This significant contribution will ensure that over 200 families receive essential support through monthly, quarterly or annual annuities, as well as crisis grants, when needed.
The CEO of O’Toole’s SuperValu, Mary Lardner, as well as Joanna Jordan, on behalf of the trust, presented a cheque for €50,000 to the IGBF.
Present at the ceremony were the IGBF’s president of appeals, Eoin Kellett, and the chairperson of the IGBF, Frances Higgins, along with key regional representatives, including chairman west Brian McNeill, John Higgins and Peter O’Connor, of the national executive committee.
Paula Marques, the manager of SuperValu Tuam, also attended the cheque presentation.
The assistance provided by the IGBF contributes to approximately €500,000 annually, helping families navigate through challenging times.
The executive secretary of the IGBF, Gus O’Reilly, emphasised the importance of such donations, saying, “Our support for up to 200 families at any one time is made possible by the generosity of donors like the Joe and Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust.
“Their commitment enables us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need in the grocery trade.”
