The traditional 'back to school' boost enjoyed by Dunnes in the 12 week period to the start of September didn't materialise this year, according to the latest figures by Kantar Worldpanel.
Dunnes market share stood at 21.4% for the period, down 6.8% on the same period last year. It has lost further ground on market leader Tesco, whose market share accounted for 28.7% in the period, a 2.4% increase on the same period last year. SuperValu remain in third, with a market share of 19.6%, a 0.4% rise on last year.
The recent success of the discounters continues apace, with Aldi and Lidl now accounting for more than an eighth of the market, 12.6%. Aldi accounts for 5.9%, with Lidl on 6.7% - both have been boosted by recent marketing campaigns around their respective Irish propositions.
Both Aldi and Lidl now have a greater market share than that of Superquinn, which has 5.6% of the market; a 4.6% decline on the same period last year.
