Lidl Ireland Pricing Survey Compares Rival Supermarket Savings

Lidl Ireland recently carried out a price comparison survey to uncover Ireland’s supermarkets savings between some of its top competitors.

The retailer carried out the survey comparing its own prices with fellow retailers SuperValu, Tesco and Dunnes Stores.

Aldi Ireland was excluded from the survey.

Cost-Of-Living

With ongoing cost-of-living concerns and grocery bills appearing to increase every month, deciding where to shop has become a key decision for customers across Ireland.

Whether it’s the money-off vouchers from Dunnes Stores, or discounts through Tesco’s Clubcard, everyone has their preferred way to save money shopping.

However, as households continue to tighten their belts, many customers will be wondering who offers the best value without skimping on quality.

To settle the debate, Lidl has started regular comparison shopping studies – pitting their prices against SuperValu, Dunnes Stores and Tesco.

Survey

Every two weeks, Lidl fills a trolley with staple items for a typical family – such as potatoes, milk, bread, fruit, chicken fillets, mince, pasta and soda bread.

At the other store, Lidl selects the closest equivalent products, considering factors such as weight, quality, branding (private label versus premium branded) and price.

For example, Lidl offers 500g of Atlantic Salmon Natural Fillets for €8.99, and the closest comparable item in SuperValu is a 400g pack of salmon fillets priced at €14.99.

Using pro rata pricing, the cost of 500g of SuperValu salmon is calculated at €18.74 – more than double the Lidl price, according to the Irish Mirror.

The latest comparisons showed the following:

  • Lidl: €150.05 before discounts; €147.26 after Lidl Plus savings
  • Dunnes Stores: €207.87 before vouchers; €172.87 after €35 voucher savings
  • Tesco: €195.83 before discounts; €185.97 with Clubcard savings
  • SuperValu: €209.96 with no Real Rewards savings

The most recent comparison took place on 6 January at stores in Dublin.
