Lidl Ireland has confirmed it will open the doors of a new store in Ballysimon, Limerick on Thursday 20 February at 8am.

The new Lidl will increase the retailer’s store count to five in Limerick and 182 in Ireland.

Located off the Groody Road, beside Limerick Educate Together Secondary School and the new Bons Secours Hospital – which is still under construction – the new store represents the first major retail offering in the area.

Lidl Ballysimon will also create 30 permanent retail jobs for the local community.

Limerick Ladies Gaelic Footballer Yvonne Lee will join the store team to cut the ribbon and officially open the new supermarket.

Along with opening day entertainment and middle-aisle offers, the first shoppers into the new store will receive complimentary Lidl vouchers.

The Ballysimon team will also present a donation of €1,000 in Lidl vouchers to local charity Milford Hospice.

The new Lidl store boasts a large sales floor, offering customers a premium shopping experience with wide aisles, self-checkouts, two Deposit Return Scheme machines, long tills, and an in-store bakery and off license.

Externally, there is a spacious carpark with dedicated EV charging spaces and regenerative landscaping.

Sustainability is at the fore of the Ballysimon store, with the concept incorporating an ISO 50001-certified energy management system, high performing energy efficient technologies and solar panels, as well as the dedicated EV charging spaces.

The opening of the store represents a major investment for Lidl, both in the local community and in its wider retail estate portfolio, continuing the retailer’s ambitious expansion plans.

Since it arrived in the county in 2000, Lidl has been a pillar of the Limerick community, starting with its first store on Childers Road.

In addition to this, it operates stores at Dock Road, Ennis Road, Castletroy, and now Ballysimon.

‘Significant Milestone’

Speaking about the store opening, regional property director for Lidl Ireland James Purcell said, “We’re delighted to announce that we will open our doors to the Ballysimon community on Thursday 20 February.

“This store has been highly anticipated by the local community and their ongoing support for the project at every stage has been extremely positive and very much appreciated.
