A number of supermarkets nationwide have closed their doors during the red-status weather warning issued across Ireland, TheJournal.ie reported yesterday.
SuperValu, Lidl Ireland and Aldi Ireland all announced that they would be shutting their stores during the weather warning accompanying Storm Éowyn, opening after warnings lift in each local area.
Despite images of empty shelves that accompanied previous storms, yesterday shoppers reported busy stores with well-stocked shelves.
A statement from Aldi read, ‘Our teams have worked diligently to prepare for this weather event, and our stores are well stocked.’
‘Protect Staff And Customers’
A spokesperson from SuperValu said, “We can confirm there will be changes to our opening hours, to protect the health and safety of staff and customers.
“This will vary, depending on local conditions, but will be limited and in line with guidance from Met Éireann.”
Aldi’s stores will remain closed for the duration of the warning in each area.
A spokesperson for Aldi said, “The safety of our colleagues and customers remains our top priority.
“In light of the red weather warnings coming into effect overnight, all Aldi Ireland stores will remain closed and will reopen only when it is deemed safe to do so.”
The spokesperson added that the retailer will share updates on its official Aldi Ireland social-media accounts.
Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland also noted that its stores would close, with a spokesperson saying, “It is planned that stores will reopen one hour after weather warnings have lifted in local areas, if safe to do so and guided by the latest safety information.”
