Meath County Council has granted permission for the construction of a new Aldi store in Johnstown, Navan, despite objections from local residents, the Meath Chronicle reported last week.
Dublin-based construction firm Byrnell Developments Ltd has been granted planning permission to go ahead with the single-storey retail store of 1,840 square metres.
The new store will have an ancillary off-licence sales area and external service area, as well as illuminated signage and an 89-space car park at the Metges Road site.
The new Aldi will be constructed on a site 0.818 hectares in size.
In addition to this, the council also granted planning permission for 45 social and affordable apartments on an adjacent site.
The new build will consist of two apartment blocks with car parking for 56 cars, single-vehicle access from the Metges Road and two pedestrian entrances as well as a communal garden, all on a site 0.46 hectares in size.
A previous proposal to build apartments on the site prompted protests from local residents in 2019.
This time around, residents have raised concerns associated with flood risks and the development’s “negative social impact” on the area, according to the Irish Independent.
A letter to the council outlined the lack of sufficient facilities for an increased population in the area, while one resident said the planned developments would sit “very uncomfortably” with the “well-spaced out” housing and green areas.
