The Revenue Customs Service has seized in excess of 23,000 unstamped cigarettes in a raid in Roscommon Town. The illicit tobacco haul had an estimated retail value of €11,000 and a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €9,000.
The 'Pall Mall', 'Marlboro', 'L&M' & 'Viceroy' brands were found concealed in two large courier packages disguised as sound speakers. It is believed that they originated in Poland. The seizure was made on Friday last.
During the past week, customs officers at Dublin Airport seized a total of 266,880 cigarettes with a retail value of €126,768 and a loss to the exchequer of €103,769, as well as 13.75kgs of roll-your-own tobacco.
A 24 year old Polish male who arrived on a flight from Lodz, Poland was arrested following the seizure, and he is scheduled to appear at Cloverhill Court this Thursday.
Finally, in Wexford, 3,000 cigarettes, 2 vehicles and 130 litres of alcohol were seized in the past week.
