A new Midlands food and drink directory has been launched by Midlandsireland.ie to highlight local producers for the region.
The directory was launched on 20 May at an event in Ballykilcavan Brewery in Stradbally, Co. Laois.
The Midlands
The comprehensive directory celebrates the rich culinary heritage of the area.
It features over 100 producers from Laois, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath.
It will not only list contact details and key stockists for businesses, but will also highlight producers to the public.
The directory also offers information on food experiences and direct sales from farm shops.
Famous for its tradition in grain milling and distilling, the region’s produce is influenced by a unique landscape.
Global names such as Tullamore Dew sits alongside household brands such as Pat the Baker, Odlums and Glenisk reflecting the rich culinary landscape of the midlands.
The region is also increasingly recognised for its emphasis on organic produce.
For example, local producer Glenisk is one of the best-known organic brands in Ireland.
The country’s first organic gluten-free oar mill, the Merry Mill in Portlaoise, recently won ‘Best Organic Food Processing SME’ in the EU Organic Awards 2023.
A surge in artisanal producers committed to local, ethical and sustainable practices is also apparent in the region.
Small businesses are revitalising communities through vibrant markets, award-winning products and by offering a unique culinary experience.
The directory categorises producers into different segments, including bakeries, organics, beverages, dairy, meats, preserves, confectionery and prepared foods.
It also offers information on farmers markets, catering services and cookery training.
'An Exciting Time'
Speaking at the launch, the marketing and communications director from Midlands Ireland Emmet Kavanagh said, “It’s an exciting time for Midlands Food and Drink, with many producers in our directory winning awards from Blas na hÉireann, the Food Writer’s Guild and more.
“This platform showcases the finest food and drink from the heard of Ireland on a national and international stage, highlighting the unique flavours and traditions of our region.”
The Midlands Food and Drink Strategy – which promotes indigenous consumption, exports and visitor engagement – created the directory.
The strategy aims to make the Midlands the most sustainable food and drink ecosystem on the island by 2030.
Its mission is to create a unified movement to elevate the sustainability, excellence, visibility, pride and economic impact of the Midlands food and drink offerings.
