SuperValu, has today (23 November) officially opened an expanded, 15,000-square foot store at Castletownbere, Co. Cork.
Murphy’s SuperValu which is one of Ireland’s oldest and most established retail businesses, and has been in the same premises for the past 187 years, is now run by Chris and Lorraine Downey.
Chris and Lorraine Downey, store owners, said, "This store has always been very special to us and has been a huge part of our family for generations. It’s hard to imagine that we have had a presence in Castletownbere since the 1830s, and our longevity is a testament to how much we invest in our local community."
Supporting Local Producers
The newly-expanded Castletownbere store will stock a number of Cork-based suppliers products including Beara Eggs, The Laughing Oyster, Milleens Cheese and Joe Hanley Milk Supplies.
"Murphy’s SuperValu has enjoyed a long and rich heritage, and this new store will allow Chris & Lorraine and their team to continue serving the local community, delivering a unique combination of quality and innovative food, complemented by a tailored local offering.” Martin Kelleher, managing director of SuperValu said.
To mark the store opening, celebrity chef Kevin Dundon was on site to deliver a cookery master class, while Irish television and radio presenter Hector Ó hEochagáin was also in attendance.
