SuperValu announced that it expects to sell 218,000 hams, with a retail value of €3.1 million, over the Christmas period.
According to the retailer, this means that one out of every three hams eaten on Christmas day will be bought in SuperValu.
SuperValu branded hams are supplied by Oliver Carty Ltd, whose managing director, Ted Carty , said “We work with some of the finest Irish farmers to ensure that we get the best product in the market. […] Christmas is an important time of year for Irish farmers and Irish suppliers.”
This year SuperValu became the first retailer in Ireland to access the world’s first national DNA database for pigs, developed by IdentiGEN. Commenting on the system, Managing Director of SuperValu, Martin Kelleher said “The IdentGEN DNA Traceback system provides customers with absolute confidence that SuperValu ham and other bacon products are fully traceable through all stages of the supply chain.”
