Permission Granted For New Supermarket In Tullamore

Offaly County Council has granted planning permission for a new 2,100 square metre (sq m) supermarket to be built in Tullamore town, the Offaly Independent reported on Monday.

The news comes four months after plans for a new SuperValu were placed on hold following concerns about roadways, cycle and pedestrian paths and adding a new seating area.

The new plans now make provision for the construction of a new link road.

Cedargate Ltd. – a subsidiary of Musgrave Group which operates SuperValu, Centra and Daybreak stores – was granted permission for a 2,100 sq m supermarket, a 240 sq m café with outside seating, a 110 sq m pharmacy, a 78 sq m shop, 135 car parking spaces and 26 bicycle spaces.

The new supermarket, will be built on lands at Collins Lane which are owned by Golden Vale Co-op Mart Limited.

Submissions

According to the Offaly Independent, the planning application attracted two submissions.

Grapemont Ltd. welcomed news of the development, but added that the development of a neighbourhood centre on the site “should be supported, providing only if it is of a scale which supports the small, localised catchment” in the vicinity.

It added that it should not impact “the vitality and viability of the town centre towards which retail development of a scale larger than ‘neighbourhood’ should be directed.”

The second submission came from the HSE, which requested that all necessary precautions are taken on the site to control “dust and rodents” arising from the building work.

It also requested that all precautions should be taken to prevent “noise impact” in the area from the proposed development.

The planners report by Brock McClure Planning & Development noted that the area had been the subject of “significant development in recent years” and that the proposed supermarket would “add to the vibrancy of the area.”

The planning report described the existing site as “under-utilised” and said that the new supermarket would create “a unique sense of place with strong community identity characterised by the public plaza to act as a prominent focal point set within the area.”
