Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized over 10.3 million cigarettes with a retail value of more than €4.7 million over the weekend at Dublin Port.
In a statement today, Revenue said that, “The cigarettes seized represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €3.9 million. This is assuming that they would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of cigarettes.”
Revenue’s mobile scanner revealed the cigarettes concealed in a 40-foot container, which had arrived into Dublin Port from Belgium, during a routine check.
The cigarettes had been listed as ‘paper handkerchiefs’ on the ship’s manifesto. Investigations into the seizure are ongoing.
