SuperValu has announced the closure of two former Superquinn outlets, SuperValu on Kennedy Avenue, Carlow and SuperValu Marketplace in Clonmel.
According to SuperValu, the retail conditions in Carlow and Clonmel have been challenging for a number of years, with both stores seeing a drop in footfall and increased competition. The two stores are set to close on 22nd January 2016, potentially leading to 98 redundancies.
Managing Director of SuperValu, Martin Kelleher commented on the closures, “It is not a decision we have taken lightly, but the stores have been loss making for almost a decade now and they do not have a sustainable future.”
He added that the closures are not reflective of the quality of work by staff in the Clonmel and Carlow stores, and thanked them for their support.
“We will now enter a consultation period with colleagues and provide out-placement support to assist them in finding alternative employment.”
