SuperValu has revealed that 5 in 10 people (54%) would consider accepting a date if asked out in a supermarket, ahead of Valentine’s Day.
The survey, commissioned by the retailer, has uncovered some unusual ways that Irish people plan on celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Results uncovered a strong preference for romantic dinners at home, an increase in Galentine’s celebrations, and the surprising fact that supermarket dates are on the rise.
Half of respondents said they would consider accepting a date if asked out in the supermarket, while 15% said they would accept immediately and share their number.
Other surprising locations where respondents were asked out included bogs, bus stops and even funerals.
When it comes to the date itself, up to 59% of respondents said they like to keep plans traditional, with a candle-lit dinner and a cosy night in remaining a cherished way to celebrate.
For 18-24 year olds, Valentine’s Day is all about the classic symbols – chocolates, flowers and dessert.
Although, traditions are being broken in other ways, with the research finding that personal preference rather than gender determined how people choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, as authenticity drives festivities.
Some 57% of respondents were in partnered relationships, but many respondents reported using the holiday to celebrate friendship and self-love.
Whether the focus is a romantic evening or a Galentine’s celebration, all agree that Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love in all its forms.
‘Personalisation’
Annie Lavin, a leading relationship therapist, master coach and SuperValu partner said, “Valentine’s Day is evolving beyond romance with many people using the day to celebrate friendship and self-love.
“Whether it’s a Galentine’s gathering or a self-care ritual, this day is becoming a beautiful reminder to honour love in all its forms.”
Lavin advised that – whether celebrating friends or a partner – it is important to plan something that makes your loved one feel seen and appreciated.
She also suggested that people should think beyond gifts, focusing instead on gratitude, quality time, and treating yourself and others with kindness and love.
SuperValu’s marketing manager Shane Lynch said, “At SuperValu, we recognise that Valentine’s Day is an occasion for everyone to celebrate love in their own way.
“Our research shows that romantic dinners at home are more popular than ever, but there’s also an increasing appreciation for self-care and Galentine’s celebrations.
“Whether it’s a quiet night in or a fun evening out, we’re proud to provide high-quality ingredients to help make these moments even more special.
“Valentine’s Day is about personalisation – it’s about celebrating the people in your life, your way.”
