“She brings a wealth of experience and business insight to the role, as well as energy and deep communications expertise. Strengthening our communications and building trust in our brand are key priorities for us and I look forward to Christine’s leadership in achieving those objectives.”

Born in Ireland, Heffernan has an Executive MBA in Business from UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.

She has communications experience across a number of sectors including energy, telecoms and financial services, and has previously worked at the European Parliament and as a policy advisor at the Treasury in London.

She previously spent four and a half years working with Vodafone, where she worked as corporate communications manager for three years, head of corporate affairs (as maternity cover), and finally as corporate segment marketing manager.

The announcement comes as the UK’s biggest retailer sets itself up to axe up for 9,000 jobs under a massive restructuring programme.
