Tesco has expressed its disappointment in trade union Mandate’s announcement that strike action will take place at 70 of the retailer’s outlets nationwide on Monday, 16 May.
The industrial action comes as Tesco seeks to move staff employed before 1996 to a new contract, which Mandate claims would see them receive a pay cut of between 15-35%, while seeing a change in their rosters.
In a statement, Tesco said, "We’re disappointed with Mandate’s announcement that they will hold strike action on Monday.
"We remain committed to reaching agreement on this issue and earlier this week we formally tabled a generous proposal for compensation for colleagues in scope."
It added that it needs to make the change in order to improve its customer service at its busiest times of the week.
Tesco also confirmed that its stores and online service would be open for business on the Monday as usual.
