Tesco Ireland has partnered with Connemara’s Wild Atlantic Ice Company to launch Just Ice, a premium 2kg party bag of locally sourced ice.
The retailer’s support for the company gave it the confidence to invest €750,000 in a state-of-the-art facility in Rossaveal, Connemara.
With funding and support from Údarás na Gaeltachta, the project has not only bolstered local production capacity, but also generated new employment opportunities in the Gaeltacht region.
Just Ice will be available in all 183 Tesco stores, as well as online, marking a significant investment in local manufacturing and job creation.
'Support Local Jobs And Communities'
On Tesco’s investment, Wild Atlantic Ice Company founder Dave Robinson said, “Partnering with Tesco gave us the confidence to invest a brand-new facility, allowing us to support local jobs and communities.”
This investment also aligns with Tesco Ireland’s broader commitment to sustainability and local sourcing.
The commercial director at Tesco Ireland Joe Manning highlighted the retailer’s focus on reducing food miles and supporting local supply chains, highlighting Irish producers as St. Patrick’s Day approaches.
Manning said, “Launching Just Ice in our stores nationwide is another example of our commitment to sustainability and bringing the best Irish products to our customers.
“However, this initiative goes beyond reducing food miles – by working with Wild Atlantic Ice Co, we’re not only offering high-quality, locally-sourced ice but also investing in the future of local communities.”
Údarás na Gaeltachta (ÚnaG), the agency responsible for economic development in Gaeltacht areas, has played an important role in developing this project a reality.
Dearbháil Ní Chualáin, director of enterprise at ÚnaG, welcomed the partnership, saying, “WE are delighted to support this venture, which strengthens the local Gaeltacht community.
“Strategic partnerships like this ensure that people can continue to live and work in areas like Connemara.”
