Tesco Ireland has today confirmed that its entire own-label range of eggs now contains barn, free-range and organic eggs only.
The move reflects a welfare commitment by the retailer to make the change before 2025.
Ahead of its committed schedule and working with its long-term partner – Greenfield Foods, Co. Monaghan – Tesco has successfully moved its 20 million dozen eggs sold annually to barn, free-range and organic Irish-farmed eggs only.
Tesco Ireland sources all of its eggs from Bord Bia-accredited Irish farms.
With this improvement in welfare standards, the retailer builds on its ongoing commitment to support sustainable Irish agriculture and producers.
Tesco is also a significant contributor to the Irish economy, with a 500-strong network of Irish suppliers.
Furthermore, all the fresh beef, chicken, lamb, pork and eggs that Tesco Ireland sells are 100% Irish, supporting over 13,000 farming families.
‘Commitment To Irish Agriculture’
The fresh-category director at Tesco Ireland, John Brennan, said, “Our partners in Greenfield Foods are the ‘egg-sperts’ in the industry, leading the way on sustainability of the sector, and that includes bird welfare.
“Since late last year, following considerable investment and a carefully planned transition, this move to barn, free-range and organic-only eggs in our range is a significant step up in welfare standards for the poultry industry in Ireland.
“Furthermore, customers can be assured that, when buying Tesco eggs, they are purchasing 100% Irish eggs, reflecting on our commitment to Irish agriculture and high-quality standards – and we’re not done yet! By year end, we hope to have transitioned all Tesco products which contain eggs to be made using barn eggs.”
