Tesco Ireland Expands Its Stronger Starts Programme To 81 Dublin Schools

Tesco Ireland has expanded its Stronger Starts programme, so that 81 Dublin schools will now receive free fresh-food packs – up from 59 schools.

The retailer has now doubled the number of schools receiving support from its nationwide Stronger Starts school programme, ahead of schedule.

Last year, Tesco Ireland committed to doubling the reach of its Stronger Starts programme by the end of 2024.

Now, it is providing weekly fresh-food packs to 240 DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) primary schools and 5,400 children around the country.

Each food pack contains a mix of seasonal fruit and vegetables.

These include fresh apples, onions, potatoes and carrots.

The food packs are delivered to those who need it most, providing nutrition and variety, to ensure a healthier future for children in Ireland.

The programme has grown rapidly since the retailer introduced it as a pilot in 2021, providing food parcels to 40 DEIS schools.

Key Irish food producers and long-standing Tesco suppliers, such as Country Crest, Keeling’s and Dole, are a vital link in the chain to providing children and families with the support that they need.

By doubling its reach, Tesco hopes to build thriving communities nationwide.

Speaking about the expansion, the communications director at Tesco, Rosemary Garth, said, “Reaching this milestone ahead of schedule is hugely significant and shows the ambition and momentum behind this important initiative.

“To date, Tesco has distributed over two million meals via DEIS primary schools, and this announcement means that hundreds more primary-school children and families who are most in need will receive free nutritious fresh fruit and vegetables, to help with healthier meal solutions at home.”
