Tesco Ireland has opened a new store in Shannon, Co. Clare this week, bringing its total store network to 180.
Opening its doors on the day of the general election – 29 November – the store in Shannon Town Centre created 44 jobs for the area.
Councillors Tony Mulcahy and Donna McGettigan gave the store their ‘number one’ as they cut the ribbon, and customer Jim Fogerty became the first person to cast his vote in the first round of the Community Fund.
The new store boasts a great selection of products, as well as an in-store bakery, a coffee station, a DRS machine and fridge doors to promote energy efficiency.
Tesco added these elements to enhance the shopping experience, as well as promoting sustainability.
‘Strong Presence Across The Country’
Speaking about the opening, the chief operating officer of Tesco Ireland Geoff Byrne said, “Our new store opening in Shannon today marks our tenth Tesco store opening in Ireland this year.
“Our investment here, along with existing stores at Shannon Banks, Ennis and Kilrush, means we have a strong presence across the country to offer the very best of Tesco quality, affordability, and shopping experience to customers.”
The manager of the new store Louise Fahy added, “This is a significant day for me and my brilliant team.
“We have worked incredibly hard to prepare for this opening, and we can’t wait to welcome and get to know our customers.
“We know there is great excitement in the area about the new store, and we hope everyone will be pleased with what we have to offer.”
Community Fund
The new store will not only benefit shoppers in the area, but the store’s Community Fund will support three local causes, making a positive impact in the area.
These groups are Shannon Family Resource Centre, Shannon Athletics Club and Shannon Active Retirement.
In addition to the Community Fund, Shannon Resource Centre also benefitted from this year’s Christmas food collection at the store.
This initiative – which ran from 29 November to 1 December – asks shoppers to donate non-perishable food items to benefit the centre, in addition to groups providing supports to families across the country.
Outside of just the community, food surplus programmes such as FoodCloud and OLIO Food Waste Heroes will ensure no food goes to waste, while the store will support the retailer’s charity partner Children’s Health Foundation.
