Tesco Ireland has released new research, carried out by Bounce Insights, which has revealed the country’s favourite uniquely Irish Christmas traditions.
Marking the retailer’s new ‘Helping Feed Your Christmas Spirit’ TV ad campaign, the survey set out to find the top things that feed and slightly dampen the Christmas spirit.
Although there are many different traditions around the country, one of the most consistent rituals is watching the Late Late Toy Show.
Some 40% of respondents said this was their favourite uniquely Irish tradition, followed by Irish Mammies having a ‘good’ tin of biscuits that no one (except special visitors) is allowed to touch (21%).
Some 18% said they love watching the Father Ted Christmas special – despite the episode airing on Christmas Eve, 1996.
When it comes to delicacies, a Christmas morning fry comes out on top with 36% of respondents citing it as a beloved tradition, followed by some 22% saying Jacob’s USA biscuit tins feed their Christmas spirit.
Some 18% mentioned the infamous leftover turkey curry as a stand-out Christmas taste.
Christmas Cheerleader
The survey found that an incredible 31% of Irish respondents rate their love of Christmas a perfect 10 out of 10.
As well as this, some 38% classify themselves a ‘Christmas Cheerleader’ – someone who adores the festive season and makes it their whole personality every year.
Just 7% of respondents labelled themselves ‘Neigh-Sleighers’ – those who just don’t get the festive hype.
Over a third of respondents (36%) say the best way to feed the Christmas spirit is to kick back with a festive movie while the Christmas tree twinkles in the background.
Some 23% had spending time with family top of their list, especially those who haven’t seen loved ones since last Christmas.
Thoughts of delicious turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce occupied the minds of some 19% of respondents, who said they were excited to treat themselves to their favourite foods.
Last-Minute Shopping
More than a quarter of respondents (29%) said nothing could dampen their Christmas spirit, but 22% said leaving the shopping to the last minute could turn the jolliest cheerleader into a Scrooge.
As a result, Tesco has its Home Delivery and Click + Collect slots available to book now on www.tesco,ie with both services available from 16 December to Christmas Eve.
