Service station operator Topaz is in talks to take over around 40 Esso garages in Ireland, according to industry sources.
While spokespeople for Topaz would not comment on the deal, news of it came out on radio station Newstalk this morning.
A takeover is likely to cost Topaz tens of millions. It would result in the petrol retailer owning over 400 petrol stations nationwide.
It is understood that Esso, who have been making a loss in recent years, have been looking for an exit from Ireland for some time.
A deal like this would require the approval of the competition and consumer protection commission.
