Tesco Ireland has released a statement welcoming the decision of staff in two further stores – Sligo and Ballina – to defy Mandate’s call for strike. The move means that a total of 8 stores of the 24 balloted have rejected Mandate’s call for action. Tesco is again calling on Mandate to ‘rethink its strategy and now accept the Labour Court Recommendation’.
In the statement, the retailer has again affirmed plans to open for business as usual tomorrow, 14 February, the day of the planned strike.
Tesco has also condemned the union’s suggestion to customers that they shop in competitor supermarkets, and called its suggestion that shoppers stop shopping ‘equally absurd’ and an indication of Mnadta’s ‘removal from reality’.
The statement also welcomed Mandate’s offer last night to call off the strike but stated that ‘setting pre-conditions of more talks after 13 months of negotiations is misguided and an undermining of the Labour Court Recommendation’.
