TOMRA Applauds Retailers And Consumers Following First Year Of DRS

Reverse vending machine supplier TOMRA Collective has congratulated Irish retailers and consumers on a successful first year under the DRS.

Re-turn – the operator of Ireland’s DRS – today announced 1 billion drinks containers returned by the public as part of the scheme.

Aldi Ireland has announced the introduction of a new DRS Savings Card as it expects to hit 200 million bottles and cans returned this month.

SuperValu and Centra are marking the first 12 months of the Deposit Return Scheme by announcing the return of 210 million containers.

When the DRS started, customers took time to adapt. One Kerry retailer saw the potential to engage the community, and ultimately, give back.

Re-turn has reported that 900 million bottles and cans have been returned since the start of the DRS on 1 February 2024.

Ireland’s DRS reduced the number of drinks containers discarded but failed to impact overall litter levels, according to IBAL.

Re-turn has issued holiday tips as Irish consumers head into their first holiday season with the Deposit Return Scheme.
