Aldi UK Workers Get Second Pay Rise In Two Months

Aldi UK is to give its hourly-paid store workers a second pay rise in two months to match the increased level offered by rival Lidl GB.

The UK arm of German discount supermarket Lidl will give its 28,000 hourly pay workers a pay rise of at least 2.8% it said on Monday.

The UK saw growth in food sales as customers turned to cooking from scratch as they battled cost of living concerns, according to NIQ.

UK grocery sales hit a record £14.6 billion in the final three weeks to Christmas on festive promotions and deals, NIQ reported on Wednesday.

Britain’s biggest supermarkets were the big winners at Christmas, according to industry data published by Kantar on Tuesday.

Aldi UK said on Monday that its sales increased by 3.4% in the four weeks to 24 December year-on-year to top £1.6 billion.

Aldi UK has reported a 16% rise in sales in Britain and Ireland to £17.9 billion in 2023, a year that saw grocery inflation peak at 17.5%.

In London, hourly pay will be raised to £13.85 (€16.19) per hour, and to £13 (€15.19) in the rest of the country.
