Amazon Launches Dedicated Irish Website

Amazon has launched its dedicated Irish website, Amazon.ie, to meet the shopping needs of Irish customers, RTÉ reported this week.

The website, which went live on Tuesday 18 March, has a selection of over 200 million products, with their prices listed in euro and offering fast delivery and returns.

Irish businesses including Barry’s Tea, Bewley’s and Ella & Jo will also soon be available on a dedicated ‘Brands of Ireland’ page.

The page, in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland, is being set up to help customers find their favourite Irish brands and help local businesses to achieve greater scale and success.

Until the launch yesterday, most Irish users shopped on the UK or other European sites.

Amazon noted that its new Irish site will mean that shoppers can avoid additional customs fees and currency conversion, as well as ensuring faster delivery times and easier returns.

Distribution Centre, Amazon Prime

In 2022, Amazon opened a new warehouse and distribution centre in Dublin, which now employs 500 people.

At the time, the US company noted that the distribution centre was a stepping stone to launching an Ireland-specific website.

Now that the website is live, customers can join Prime on Amazon.ie for €6.99 a month, to qualify for free delivery and exclusive deals on events and products.

Irish customers who already have an Amazon Prime membership with a different domain can easily switch and have their other Prime membership cancelled and refunded when they do so.

All customers – including those switching over – are entitled to a 30-day free Amazon Prime trial.

‘Continued Commitment To Ireland’

The Ireland country manager at Amazon, Alison Dunn, said that the store brings a wide selection of value products with fast delivery to customers in Ireland, as well as a local Prime membership and opportunities for businesses to reach more shoppers.

Dunn said, “We have been building towards this moment since the launch of our fulfilment centre in Dublin in 2022, and we can’t wait to write the next chapter of our story in Ireland.”

The Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, said, “Amazon.ie provides even more opportunities for Irish businesses to reach global markets and help create domestic jobs.

“Amazon is a significant contributor to the Irish economy and [Tuesday’s] announcement strongly underscores Amazon’s continued commitment to Ireland.”

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that Amazon’s expansion will give Irish customers more choice and better value, as well as helping SMEs reach a new audience across the country and beyond.

Amazon currently employs about 6,500 people in Cork, Dublin and Drogheda.

In 2023, Irish SMEs selling on Amazon recorded over €170 million in export sales, with over half of those export sales reaching outside the EU.
