Amazon today announced its plans to launch an Irish website – Amazon.ie – in 2025 to “enhance the retail experience” for new and existing Irish customers and business owners.
The new site aims to lower custom and delivery costs for Irish customers, as well as improving the delivery and return process.
It will also add more Irish businesses to the site to widen their distribution within Ireland and abroad.
Amazon previously opened a distribution centre in Dublin in 2022, which created 500 jobs.
The company opened the centre to improve efficiency for deliveries in Ireland, which has now paved the way for this new development.
Over 1,000 small and medium-sized Irish enterprises (SMEs) already sell on Amazon, generating over €150 million in export sales in 2022 alone.
Amazon In Ireland
The new online store will be supported by a new five-year deal between An Post and Amazon announced last year.
The Seattle-founded company already employs 6,500 people in Ireland, across Cork, Dublin and Drogheda.
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke TD said of the news, “I am delighted to see Amazon continuing to grow its presence in Ireland.
“The launch of an Irish store will enhance customer experiences in Ireland and provide a significant platform for Irish SMEs to expand their online presence and grow their business.
“The announcement is a significant reaffirmation of Amazon’s commitment to Ireland, and I wish all involved every success.”
Amazon has invested more than €17 billion in Ireland’s economy since 2020.
Amazon Web Services’ (AWS’s) investment in cloud infrastructure has expanded Ireland’s economic output by over €11 billion in the past decade.
John Boumphrey, Ireland & UK Country Manager at Amazon, commented, “The launch of Amazon.ie will be great news for Irish customers and we’re looking forward to opening its virtual doors in 2025.
“This underscores our continued commitment to Ireland, and will bring a wide selection of great value products with fast delivery to Irish customers, as well as provide great opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses to reach a bigger audience at home and abroad.”
'Unlock Growth Opportunities'
Laura McCarthy, the founder of Drink Botanicals Ireland, sells her products on Amazon to UK, US and European markets.
McCarthy said selling on Amazon has been “transformative” for her business, contributing to a global customer base and creating local jobs.
She said, “For Irish sellers, a dedicated online store makes it easier to compete with larger brands and attract more customers both in Ireland and overseas.
“Simplifying the process for Irish sellers to expand into overseas markets with the help of Amazon also means local sellers can unlock growth opportunities and reach customers on a global scale.”
Amazon has said it will release more details about the new store for customers and SMEs in the coming months.
