Up to €8.5 million is being provided to support the installation of the first transmission connected Central Grid Injection (CGI) facility for renewable gas and a grant scheme to support circa 74 compressed natural gas vehicles.
The project, Gas Networks Ireland’s Graze Gas - Green Renewable Agricultural Zero Emissions Gas, will generate gas from food and agriculture biodegradable waste.
The project is capable of supplying up to 56,000 homes with energy and fuel for vehicles using compressed natural gas, and will account for 8% of total natural gas supply.
Climate Action Fund
The funding is part of the Government's new Climate Action Fund, as part of Project Ireland 2040.
Under the scheme, the government will provide at least €500 million in funding to support initiatives that provide for ‘the kind of change that is needed’.
Announcing the successful projects, Minister Bruton said: "The projects we are supporting under the Fund, will support decarbonisation across the transport, heat, electricity and agriculture sectors and demonstrate the types of investments we need to make.
"This investment by the Government will leverage additional investment from the project promoters and marks significant step towards achieving our ambitions."
