(27 May) Bord Bia has released new research that indicates that 66% of Irish consumers don’t let the rain dampen their spirits during barbecue season. Over half of those surveyed (56%) choose to cook outdoors but eat indoors when the rain threatens to pour and only 10% have cancelled their barbecue due to the weather.
The new research coincides with the launch of new season lamb, with Bord Bia encouraging consumers to consider barbequing or cooking Bord Bia Quality Assured lamb for a range of everyday meals.
68% of respondents consider barbecues as a healthy way to dine, with many (60%) choosing to cook meats such as Quality Assured lamb and include wholesome salads and vegetables on the day.
According to the Bord Bia survey, the Irish have quite sophisticated palates when it comes to cooking lamb, with 52% using lamb in a Moroccan tagine, 46% making lamb burgers and 23% using it in a stir fry.
When it comes to planning for barbecues, the Irish go to great lengths in their preparation for the occasion with 61% taking the time to marinate their meat in herbs and spices before cooking and 41% preparing home-made burgers to cook on the BBQ. 42% even go to the effort to create a special seasoning or rub for their meat to bring out the flavours on the barbecue.
