Spanish retail giant El Corte Inglés has launched a new website aimed at Irish shoppers.
The website, www.elcorteingles.eu, is also targeting the UK, France and Netherlands, however it is the first time the Spanish operator has included Ireland in its international plans.
Of particular note from a grocery context is the range of gourmet food products available from the store - with everything from oils and seasonings to Iberico ham available via mail order. Clothing and houseware items are also available.
"We must strengthen our e-commerce network using the current strength of our platform, which has become a benchmark with over 3.5 million registered users, 30 specialty stores and 137 million visits with an annual growth of 11.6%," a El Corte Inglés spokesperson said.
While El Corte Inglés may not be that well-known in Ireland, its entry here is likely to pique the interest of Dunnes Stores and Marks & Spencer, both of which have launched online shopping channels focused on clothing and textiles, but have not yet ventured into online food sales.
Last November, El Corte Inglés issued €600 million in corporate bonds on the Irish Stock Exchange.
